An apple a day keeps the doctor away?

The quote “an apple a day keeps the doctor way” seems to be confirmed by a study published in British Medical Journal.

The researchers used a statistical model and data from older studies of nutritional habits and their effects on health. The statistical analysis led to the cappleonclusion that if the British population added an apple to their daily diet, 8500 deaths from cardiovascular disease could be avoided every year.

Another impressive conclusion of the study was that the expected effect of  the prescription of a statin (a cholesterol drug highly effective for prevention) to the whole British population over 50 years old would lead to the avoidance of 9500 deaths from cardiovascular disease annually. An effect which is comparative to the effect from eating apples!

In conclusion, according to the researchers, a simple dietary change could have an important effect on population’s health without the risk of side effects. Of course, this doesn’t mean that we could substitute medicines with food but on the other hand it shows us how important is nutrition for our health.
