COVID-19 increases the risk of cardiovascular disease (video)

COVID-19 increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. According to a study published at Nature Medicine, people who had suffered COVID-19 between March 2020 and January 2021, had a higher risk of cardiovascular disease during the following 12 months.

There was a 63% increase of all cardiovascular diseases that have been studied (or 45,29 more cases per 1000 people) including strokes, arrhythmias, pericarditis and myocarditis, myocardial infarction heart failure and thrombosis.

The risk was increased in people that suffered from severe COVID-19 (hospitalized in normal wards or intensive care units). Interestingly, the risk was increased in people who suffered mild COVID-19 as well.

Also, previously healthy people demonstrated an increased risk.

Therefore, all who has suffered COVID-19 should be more careful in preventing heart disease. Authorities and health providers should prepare to treat an increased number of cardiovascular disease patients.

Cardiologist Dr Theodoros Christodoulides discusses the study findings with Mr Nikitas Kyriakou at Mera Mesimeri TV show of ANT1.
