On 22 March 2022, we had the opportunity to proceed with the first Optimizer® Smart (Impulse Dynamics®) device implantation to a young patient with heart failure due to dilated cardiomyopathy. The implantation procedure was performed by Dr Ilias Papasavvas at Apollonion Private Hospital. The device helps to improve cardiac muscle contractility. This is achieved through precisely timed electrical pulses which are sent from the device to the heart for some periods throughout the day (cardiac contractility modulation). The Optimizer® Smart device looks like a pacemaker and is implanted under the skin of the chest. It is connected with electrical leads which are placed through veins in the right ventricle of the heart. It can be used in patients with heart failure who remain symptomatic despite the use of optimal treatment.
