Transesophageal echocardiography

Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is an imaging method. The heart is scanned using ultrasound by a probe which is inserted through the mouth to the esophagus. It allows imaging of heart structures which are not visible with the usual cardiac ultrasound. Its commonest indications are the investigation of cause of stroke, before the electrical cardioversion of arrhythmias, the detailed imaging of heart valves etc. It is usually performed under sedation to ensure convenience of the patients.
